ESEARCH ENGINES

Info Seek
Infoseek Corporation's site offers a quick way to find popular Web pages, although it's less effective than Digital's AltaVista at locating obscure names in lesser-known Web pages.

AltaVista
Digital Equipment claims that AltaVista site has the largest index of any web engine: some 10 billion words in over 21 million web pages. If you need to locate an obscure company or product, or even a long-lost relative, Alta Vista is your best choice.

Yahoo!
One of the best known Web search tools, Yahoo Corporation's self-named Web page like Infoseek, is a fast way to locate the Web's most popular sites.

Yaholigans!
The Yahooligans web guide for kids offers a basic search engine and special services including one called School Bell. Click on the School Bell button and you gain access to the Homework Answers area, with a vast array of online references

Excite
Sponsored in part by Sun Microsystems, Excite stands out because it lets you narrow your search to scan only Web sites, Usenet newsgroups, types of content like classified ads, or Excite's database of Web site reviews.

Magellan
The Magellan site is an online directory of business, entertainment, reference, and other sites reviewed with attitude by the company's stable of writers.

SavvySearch
When you want an intensive, all-points-bulletin search, Colorado State University's innovative tool lets you send a search query simultaneously to about two dozen Net-based search engines, including some listed here.

Jadoo
Jadoo lays claim to being the first official Indian search engine. It has a screen format similar to that of Yahoo! and compares well with the popular search engine with good search features.

Web Crawler
Web Crawler is managed by AOL but accessible to anyone on the Web. It isn't the fanciest search site around, but it is one of the cutest! A cartoonlike spider in the logo makes WebCrawler's home page attractive to children, and the interface to the search engine is simple enough probably for second and third graders to use. WebCrawler's database isn't as extensive as some of the others mentioned, but it's useful nonetheless.

Lycos
Lycos claims to have indexed more than 90% of the web. Besides providing a comprehensive indexed reference to the WWW, Lycos indexes Gopher, FTP and HTTP files found elsewhere on the Internet. It also includes an extensive directory of about 40,000 of the most popular sites on the Web and reviews of more than 7,000 of them.

MetaCrawler

HotBot

Netscape's Internet Search Page
Here you'll find an up-to-date list of the dozen or so must popular search sites and hypertext links to get you to the sites themselves.

Net Locator
It performs searches using AltaVista, Lycos, or any one of a number of other popular Web databases.
