WinHammer is a commercial app with a shareware version. It is a powerful MIDI Sequencer with lots of features but you can't accuse it of being keyboard friendly. And creating sheet music with a mouse is a fairly torturous process. But you can get a lot done with it. You can compose music using both the track view or the sheet music view. It has a nice mixer panel which lets you control the various tracks - volume, stereo pan, etc. You can record music from any MIDI source.

CakeWalk comes in various avatars. It's a home studio software that lets you record and play both MIDI and WAV tracks in the same file. CakeWalk is well designed and while it comes with a fairly powerful MIDI module this isn't its USP. WinTune 97	This is a benchmarking freeware from Windows Magazine. It includes data on systems ranging from 386s through Pentium Pros.
Q-WinSafe 98	This software lets you save upto five configuratiosn of your computer. In the case of an emergency, the configurations can be restored.

vanBasco's MIDI Player	This MIDI Player plays MIDI files and provides you with useful statistics about how much of the song has been played, etc.

Cool Edit	Manipulate sound to your ear's content with this robust waveform editor. The utility includes an array of noise-altering effects such as Echo, Stretch, and more. It supports a wide range of audio file formats - WAV, AIFF, Real Audio and even MPEG 1 & 2 (though you have to download additional filters from their web site)
Scream Tracker	An excellent STM/MOD file designer for DOS. It is freeware
Impulse Tracker	The best STM/MOD designer for DOS. Seems to have been inspired by Scream Tracker. Has an interface which matches that of Scream Tracker.
WinAmp	The best MP3 Player for Windows! Has hundreds of add-on utilities available for it for adding special sound/visual effects. The only program I've seen with a graphic equilizer. Use it to believe it!
WinPlay3	A excellent shareware MP3 Player. Suports song lists and queueing of songs.

Support Help	SupportHelp bills itself as a one-stop shore where visitors can find contact information for hardware and software manufactureres, with an emphasis on technical support, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and web site links
ZDNet Software Library	This is one of the best shareware resources on the Net - everything is reviewed, rated, virus-checked and categorized.
